Essay structure– Some dos and don’ts

All the time, we come across people trying to tell us what to do and what not to do. This could be quite exasperating and frustrating. However, one should remember that while in the process of learning a particular skill, instruction should be well received. • Make sure that the structure follows a commonly recognized pattern. There should be an intro first, followed by a couple of paragraphs and then you need to finish by putting in a concluding portion.
• Make sure that your essay contains transitional sentences that are strategically placed. If you are going to put in a sentence that has no connection with the previous paragraph, it means that it has not contributed to the structural correctness of the essay. It also means that you have not understood the complete meaning of the topic or question.
• Remember that you cannot fill up your essays with too many quotations. This again does not look very good in an essay. If you want to include a few quotes or statements, it is essential that you put it in only in relevant places.
• Make sure you adopt the right kind of diction and manner of writing. One cannot afford to be aggressive or rude while writing. If you are able to achieve this, it means you have become a good writer.

• Do not use flowery and inappropriate language. The use of slang and colloquialisms should never be encouraged.
• Do not use a font that looks very good, but is not all that legible. You will probably have your professor asking you to redo your essay in another font, if he cannot understand what you have written.
• Do not write an essay without working on an outline. It is certainly not a professional thing to do. If you have a plan, your essay will turn out to be quite good.
