Essentials of a PhD thesis
There you are at your peak which you will carry as a merit quality that could be published. It is going to be the largest, lengthiest and most self-indulgent piece of work you will ever get to do, but nevertheless so rewarding you will carry with you all your life. You would want to make sure you do this just perfectly. A thesis is the dissemination of new knowledge; therefore it’s your job to not only do this perfectly but to ‘sell’ your thesis to the minds of your readers. A PhD thesis is an exposition of an original or new research submitted for a PhD qualification. It includes a discussion or statement that is unproven and not researched. To make its purpose known it has to be backed by relevant research or theories (if any apply) and how it is important for future research. This is purely the writer’s endeavor that needs to be well explained for its purpose and the merit of its contribution to knowledge. It includes:
• Demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of your thesis
• Suitable and systematic methods used to evaluate the thesis
• Demonstrate how this is ‘new’ to the research community
• A bibliography and brief explanation of theories that you used in the thesis
Keeping this well in sync, you must keep yourself well-guided and supported with whatever resources around you. The best resource apart from your reading material is you examiners. Even PhD thesis will be checked by an examiner or group of examiners. Your examiners need to appreciate your research, in order to do this well, make sure you first:
1. Choose your examiners well
2. Discuss your thesis with them
3. Keep them updated with your research progress
4. Seek counsel from them regularly as you progress
What they do not know is that:
• Whether you are missing out something in your research
• How good your research is, if your thesis doesn’t look good
So the priority is that your thesis is at least written well, before the importance and use of the research. To tailor your thesis well, just make sure you follow a standard guide, late you can add and manipulate as you would like, given purpose and objective is intact.
• Introduction (your area of study)
• The problemhypothesisstatement (that you intend to tackle)
• Literature review (what published literature says about the problem)
• How you have resolved or tackled the problem
• Methodology: how you came about the solution
• Conclusion: the result of the research and how it meets your objective
Once you have designed and started following the template, you are on your track and half of your hassles and worries are covered. Don’t be afraid to change your mind, the reason for doing research is to look for surprises. A PhD thesis may evolve brings conclusions that you never expected, so you may discover a better purpose than you first thought. Bottom line should be that your thesis is written well and readers are able to understand your work. However, do not omit anything from the standard points. They are extremely important in their own right.
