How to choose a research paper topic
Finding an appropriate research paper topic is one of the basic and most important steps of essay writing. If you are a beginner at research writing you can easily be amongst one of those writers who fall into the pit of wrong topic selection and ending in greater stress and more work to do. This is one of the most common mistake that students make when they are given a free choice to choose a topic that my interest them. This is a place where most students are caught in a dilemma between what to choose and should it impress the audience. You end up opting for a topic that you usually have no or very little knowledge about and thus find no motivation in writing about it.
When you choose a research paper topic the best advice that can be given is not opting for a topic that has to do with sport, sport figures or music. Such topics are not seen as really interesting mainly because even if you look through twenty different sources you will lack information and you will be stretching your paper. Your research will lack material and content and you will be ending up repeating the information over and over.
Also, choosing a research paper topic that may be sensitive such as religion is not advisable. Writing on such topics the author usually leaves behind the research and uses more of his own knowledge to prove his point. The author’s point of view is usually biased and topics like religion are very sensitive and can create ill feeling if not written properly and without biases. The values that a student has will always clash with his writing when he is writing on such a topic.
Instead of giving the student a choice to choose their own research paper topic the best thing that the instructor can do is give the student to write down five topics of their choices in order of preference and then turn it in. Once, this is done the instructor will have in his hand a list from which he can assign any topic he wants, to a student. Once the topic is assigned the instructor can give a clear guideline as to what is expected from the paper and what aspects the students should focus more on when writing.
The general considerations for each topic are that these topics need to be ones that have ample information available on them. Also, the information that is there need to be easy to comprehend or else the student will be trying understand a lot of points when doing his research and will easily run out of time before things are finalized.
Before the instructor assigns a research paper topic he needs to understand and also research the topic if he has time before he assigns it. Also, the topic should be such that the student gets to learn something from it and not something that just looks flashy but does not provide any knowledge or benefit to the students.
