Introduction

We have been writing essays almost all our lives. But do we know how exactly an essay is defined? An essay is a short piece of writing that is usually written from the author’s point of view. Essays are written by students who attend schools and colleges. There are many educational institutions that judge students for admission, on the basis of the essays that they write. These are called admission essays or college essays. There are basically four types of essays. They are descriptive essay , narrative essay, expository essay and persuasive essay.

Descriptive essays

The most widely used type of essay is the descriptive essay. It is what the name implies. This type of essay is a detailed description of a place, person or a thing and so on. The description should include elements that the readers can feel using their senses. The readers must be able to imagine the look, the feel, the smell, the sound and the taste of whatever that is being described. This only means that the writer should include every intricate detail of the element that he or she describes so that nothing, whatsoever, would be left to the readers’ imagination. For instance, consider the following sentences.

Both these sentences convey the same meaning- that he was scared when he saw the lion. But there is surely a vast difference between the two sentences based on the way that they are written. The first sentence conveys the message plainly. But, the second sentence explains to the readers the magnitude of fear that he felt when he saw the lion. This is called description. Thus a descriptive essay must include components that the reader can feel using his senses while reading.

Narrative essays

Narrative essays are in the form of story telling. One can include one’s personal opinions and feelings about a particular issue. More importantly, a narrative essay is concerned with a sequence of events that occurred at a particular point of time. It tells the readers what someone did and when. Mostly narrative essays contain first person details and also include one’s personal opinions on a particular issue.

Expository essays

An expository essay is nothing but a set of instructions or guidelines for the readers to follow. It is written for the purpose of helping the readers do something. For instance, a recipe for making a dish is a form of expository writing.

Persuasive essay

A persuasive essay is what the name implies. It persuades or convinces a person to do something that is good for him. The ultimate aim of a persuasive essay is to make people do what the writer wants them to do. It makes the readers think about what the writer wants to convey and allows room for them to consider following it. A persuasive essay is usually written to bring about a change in the society for the welfare of the people etc.
