Othello Essay – How to Write It?

Introduction

Othello essay is about one of the most famous tragic acts of world famous writer, actor, poet, lyricist and dramatist William Shakespeare. William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon. His works consists of thirty eight plays, hundred and fifty four sonnets, two long narrative poems and several other short poems. His plays can be widely classified into humor, history, romance and tragedy. He is often called as England’s national poet. His works have been translated in all major languages and his plays have been adopted for movies. The most famous of his plays is Romeo and Juliet. Though there is not much information about his personal life, he was married at the age of eighteen to Anne Hathaway who was eight years older to him and it is believed by many that they had an unhappy married life. Some also believe that he was a bisexual from the way he has written love sonnets about a man, but there is no evidence to prove these.   So when you write an essay on any of William Shakespeare’s work, make sure that you give an introductory paragraph on the writer.

Othello – a soldier working for the Venetian estate. A person who would not trust his wife.
Desdemona – Othello’s loving and loyal wife who was not by her near and loved ones, first her father and then her husband.
Iago- Othello’s ancient, a position below lieutenant. The villain of the play. He is the reason for Othello distrusting his wife.
Cassio- a friend and lieutenant of Othello who admires Othello’s wife Desdemona. It is this admiration that Iago uses to say that Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona.
Brabantio- Desdemona’s reluctant father who refuses to give her in marriage to Othello.
Emilia- wife of Iago who finally brings the out the truth of Iago’s treachery.

These are the main characters in the play who bring in the twists and turns in the play. There are also other characters like the Duke of Venice, Bianca who is Cassio’s mistress, Gratiano who is the brother to Brabantio, Roderigo a wealthy gentleman in love with Desdemona, etc you can mention all these characters in this essay.

The play’s main theme is Othello not trusting his wife and blames her of having a relationship with his friend Cassio and finally killing her to ease his pride. When he finally realizes that Desdemona is innocent, it will be too late. He then kills himself for making such a terrible mistake. The play has a very tragic ending with most of the main characters dying.
