What is an opinion essay?
Introduction
Essays are of myriad types, many of which have their specific purpose. For instance, descriptive essay, narrative essay and so on. An opinion essay is one among those essays that serve a purpose, and this benefits both the writer and the reader effectively. In fact it may be considered slightly more beneficial to the writers. In such an essay the writer is free to express his opinion strongly and he can adopt any approach that he finds is most appropriate. This “opinion” need not necessarily be one that is negative or controversial; the writer may also express his opinion in favor of something, or sometimes even choose to list out the pros and cons in the essay. For example in an opinion essay on “Capital punishment” the writer may choose to express his distaste for the practice or on the contrary he may choose to write in favor of the practice. Some writers are also found to write in a way that combines may different opinions, though this is not ideally the way opinion essays are to be written, it is however permissible. The most highlighting factor about such essays is the freedom that one is given to express his or her opinions boldly and however vehement they choose for it to be. The writer can invoke any deep stirring emotion through such essays, like that of patriotism, hatred; passion etc. opinion essays could be called personal essays in way because it allows us to express our truest opinions in way that does not necessarily have to be diplomatic. We can express our own personal views without having to restrict ourselves from anything. In most essays writers are not given complete freedom of expression as in opinion essays.
How to write an opinion essay?
An opinion essay does not follow a specific essay format. The conventional five paragraph format could be applied here too. The introductory paragraph should explain the issue at hand on which we choose to express our opinion. It is important to present to the reader a general third person’s view on the issue before going in to express our personal opinion on it. This part of the essay lets the reader make up his mind about the issue.
The subsequent paragraphs is the part where the writer starts to express his opinion and he is allowed o write as explicitly as he desires to create the desired impact. However his opinions and expressions also need to be justified by others too. This is where the writer states similar opinions expressed by other eminent people and he should also take efforts to draw up the necessary statistics, case studies and any sort of factual information that would add to the credit of the essay. And finally the conclusion part of the essay should yet again be impacting. This is perhaps the part where the writer can be at his expressive best. This is the part of the opinion essay that lays the lasting impression and therefore it is very important that this part should be written after utmost thought. This could be called the “cherry on the cake” and it is important for it to be placed right to make it picture perfect!
