Do Student Essays Test the Creativity of Students?
An essay is usually referred to as a small piece of writing that is written from the author’s own point of view. An essay is of many types. The four main types of essays are descriptive essay, narrative essay, persuasive essay and expository essay. The most commonly used types of essays are the descriptive and narrative essays. Descriptive essay is that which describes something or someone with vivid details. The description should be in such a way that the reader is able to see, smell, touch, hear the object or subject being described. There is no place for emotions in a descriptive essay. The narrative essay, on the other hand, is something that contains a sequence of events that occurred at a particular point of time. The writer also expresses his feelings towards a certain matter in a narrative essay. Hence, the descriptive and narrative essays are the most commonly used types of student essays.
When we talk about these essays that students write, there arises a question automatically – do these essays provide the students enough scope for creativity? At school level, students are required to write essays related to science, history, geography and so on. Here, all that they would have to do is research the facts and present them in an orderly manner as in a proper essay. The scope for creativity is less here as the facts remain facts regardless of how a person looks at them. The scope for creativity is thus limited. But it is the way in which one presents it changes it all. The facts can be presented differently and that is where the students can exhibit their creativity. This is as regards the descriptive essay.
In the case of a narrative essay, the scope for creativity is more because the student writes his own thoughts and feelings. Sometimes, a sequence of events that occurred at a point of time is also mentioned. In such a case, the individuality of the student is weaved out and his/her creativity is exhibited. Sky is the limit for creativity. There are numerous ways in which something can be done and when each student finds a way to write the essays that is different form the rest, the pleasure of reading the essays is great! Each essay would be a treat – a surprise! Thus, having scope for creativity in such essays should be encouraged.
Creativity is something that cannot be taught. It has to come from within an individual. If someone tells you that he is going to teach you how to be very creative, you can laugh at him to your heart’s content and then ask him to get a good English dictionary! The word ‘creativity’ loses its very meaning when someone attempts to teach it. Thus creativity cannot be taught- it can only be experienced. So, let’s allow people to experience creativity when they write student essays! As a matter of fact, creativity is what makes it all interesting. Contact custom essays for more details.
