Writing an a level paper is not a daunting task

Saturday, September 26th, 2009

When a student is faced with the task of doing a paper on a particular subject, there is no doubt that the thought of writing it, is a daunting one. However, if you know the basics of doing an a level paper, this will not be so. So, getting to know the basics is an all-important task.
As a student of an international curriculum that is offered by the University of Cambridge, UK, I realized the importance of learning the A to Z of writing an a level paper. I was quite aware of the fact that doing an A level qualification would give me the leverage that I was looking for, when zoning in on the right career path. Since I had always been interested in the development of society, with special reference to the attitudes of people in various spheres, I decided to take Sociology, Psychology and Environmental Management as my key subjects for the A levels.
The two-year course is quite demanding and involves a lot of hard work and effort on the part of not just students, but also on the part of teachers who have to be so well informed about the subject, failing which they will not be able to reach out to their wards. One of the first assignments that are given to a student doing A levels is the task of choosing from a wide variety of writing topics. Though the teacher is there to guide the student in his or her search for the right topic, it is important to know which one to choose, in order to ensure that a good essay is written.
While doing an a level paper, the student understands that the many tips that he has been getting all through his years of schooling need to be honed to the fine art of essay writing. The student is aware that an essay consists of the usual or mandatory sections such as:
•    Introduction
•    Developmental context
•    Main body of the essay
•    Discussion and related case studies
•    Conclusion with suggestions & recommendations, where relevant
Though these are the common divisions that form the basis of an a level paper it is important for the student to focus more on each of these sections in order to produce a paper that could attract a high grade such as a B or an A. When the subject at hand is Psychology, for example, it is necessary for the student to make it into a good informative essay, so that there is both information and inferences that are given on the subject. For instance, if the topic concerns the work of Sigmund Freud, it is not enough if the student sketches the work of Freud in a loose or general way. It is important for the student to write about his works, the areas of study that have been influenced by the works of Freud, the criticisms brought forth by various other psychologists and the numerous case studies involved in all these.
